Wilson's Taranaki Period
Exploration of Various Mediums

During the 70's Wilson was further developing his artistic talents and was part of a very productive group of artists from New Plymouth, Derek Bollen, Michael Smithers, Don Driver and other very talented artists residing in the Taranaki area. This was a very interesting period in Wilson's life where he was recognised for his strong Draughtsmanship and highly emotive and creative choice of subject matters to paint.

IGOR STRAVINSKY

There was a strange mixture of human suffering, a searching for spiritual direction and yet there was a very bouyant and humorous side to this complex artist. There was a dark and private side to Wilson that very much developed an underground following of his works.

Painting of Christ

Like many artists of repute, Wilson paid little attention or concern for monetary reward ... his passion for the creation of meaningful and sincere art was the cradle of a maturing talent bordering on genius. He was progressively developing a reputation and the attention of an underground group of savvy collectors.

The Agony and Ecstasy

WILSON maintains an almost unquenchable thirst to express his God given talents in many different mediums. He received excellent reviews and comments from Colin McCahon on his powerful and expressive woodcuts which were included in an exhibition in the Govett Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth. This period in the mid to late 1970's was one in which Wilson made his mark on the New Zealand art scene, and created some astounding art which revealed his depth of feeling and sense of humour. One thing became very clear, He quickly developed an underground following and at the same time began to withdraw from the scene to the base of Mount Egmont in search of a deeper spiritual understanding of his expressive nature.
